A Clutter-Free Closet for "Minimalist" Maven Shira Gill

What She Wanted
Home organizing expert, author and speaker Shira Gill has mastered the art of helping people clear the clutter from their lives. So, when it came time to tackle her daughter Chloe’s closet, Shira had an action plan in place.
After one already-successful closet design and installation, Shira returned to California Closets San Francisco Bay Area. Working with designer Maggie Erickson, they set out to achieve a clean, custom design solution for Chloe’s closet, which had also become the family’s catchall area.
Our home is over one hundred years old, 1,200 square feet, and has two closets for the four of us. Jordan and I share one closet, and the other closet in 12-year-old Chloe’s room houses…everything else.
How we did it
Maggie did an initial walk-through of the space, collected dimensions, and drafted an ultra-functional design that could accommodate both Chloe’s wardrobe and the family’s essentials
Working around unique challenges, like a large immovable bench that covered a pitched roofline below it, Maggie turned what could have been an obstruction into an opportunity.
The pièce de resistance? A double tilt-out hamper, large drawer, and ample hanging space creates the everyday utility the space desperately needed.
Shira and her family prefer quality over quantity when it comes to their personal belongings. They enjoy being able to see inventory, rather than filling shelves to the brim.

The best part is Chloe is super thrilled with the new closet because she feels like it is finally her own space, but we still have designated spots to tuck away our family’s suitcases and memento bins, as well as hang longer items.
Together, Shira and Maggie achieved a clean-lined design that while minimal in style, realizes the maximum storage potential of this space for Chloe and her family.
